High Adventure Packing Lists

Scouts in the High Adventure program need to pack different gear for hiking and backpacking trips than what is needed for traditional troop activities. Here are lists to aid in packing for different HA activities.
WARM Weather HIKing
A warm weather hike is a hike when consistent / warm conditions can be reasonably assured. This means hikes occurring from late-spring through early-fall at standard elevations. Any hikes that occur outside of those months OR at higher elevations (even during the summer) should be packed and prepared for as "cold weather" hikes!

Weather at higher elevations is often much different and can change much more quickly than at standard elevation. A scout should be prepared for challenging weather during ANY month when hiking at higher elevations.

Warm Weather Backpacking

Backpacking is any hiking trip that involves overnight camping. Additional gear is required for backpacking like a tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, and food. Packing for this requires a careful balance between having the proper gear to be fully prepared, yet not carrying excess weight. Not exceeding the proper pack weight for your body is critical for having an enjoyable backpacking experience. This list is for a 2 - 3 day trip.

This list is a guideline for what a Scout will need for a typical weekend backpacking trip during the warmer months May - September. All of the items must be able to fit into or secured to a Scout’s backpack. Total pack weight should NOT be more than 20% of your body weight. Some items can be shared between scouts or the entire group to limit pack weight.
